European NGOs organise the "Eurovision Aid Contest". Winner: Sweden - Loser: Italy!

Outside a meeting of European Development Ministers on 18 May European NGOs held a “Eurovision Aid Contest” exposing just how European Member States are really performing on their aid promises to developing countries.

The song performers, wearing the masks of the heads of government of these four countries – Sweden, Spain, Austria and Italy - faced a jury from Europe and developing countries. Italy and Austria were issued with damning judgements, whilst Spain and Sweden were praised as leaders in aid provision.

“Words, promises and pledges are nice but real aid commitments are more useful to the poor. From countries like Italy, we need less ‘parole’ and more action to put an end to poverty,” said Noerine Kaleeba, ActionAid’s President, who is from Uganda.

European governments U-turn on the poor as economic crisis grips - 14 May 2009

As developing countries face the full impact of the economic crisis, European governments are falling short by nearly €40bn on their aid promises, a new report from CONCORD.

As Noerine Kaleeba, Chair of ActionAid International, said: 'France, for example, spent 45 times more on bailing out its banks last year, than it did on providing aid for poor countries. Europe needs to refocus its efforts on bailing out the poor'. ¬

2009 elections at the European Parliament: What CONCORD expects from candidate MEPs

imageIn June 2009, more than a half billion citizens of the 27 member States of the European Union (EU) will elect their representatives to the European Parliament for the 2009-2014 term. On this occasion, the CONCORD manifesto identifies and discusses three essential EU objectives: namely sustainable development, more and better development aid and democratic accountability, as well as urging MEPs to act on them.

Trade, agriculture, environment, migration and many other policies have an impact on sustainable development. Yet, these policies have not sufficiently and directly contributed to poverty eradication and the promotion of human rights within the EU, nor at the global level. In addition, the fact that the implementation of these policies exacerbates the situation of people outside the EU is frequently ignored. The Manifesto is available in different languages on this link.

False sheen on European aid money: NGOs comment OECD aid official figures

Figures released today reveal that development aid from rich country members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), has barely risen despite the huge impact of the financial crisis on developing countries.

But for CONCORD the OECD figures give no grounds for celebration. Whereas aid rose slightly in 2008, this year EU countries are cutting their budget just as the financial crisis begins to bite into developing countries resources. Read the whole press release.
